In America during the 1980s is where it all began, when a sudden moral panic, which became known as the Satanic Panic, arouse. Hundreds of false accusations of the abuse of children in satanic rituals and the danger of Satanic cults with their thirst for both animal and human sacrifice, spread across the United States. Media attention opened a floodgate which led to a worldwide spread of this moral panic’s infestation, which leaked well into the 1990s.
Allegations involved a conspiracy that a global Satanic cult which included the wealthy and powerful rich elite of the world, along with celebrities of all walks, in which children were abducted or bred for human sacrifice, pornography and prostitution. Numerous court cases, testimonies from alleged victims and criminal investigations took place due to all these conspiracy allegations. The Satanic Panic during the mid-80s became the hot topic of news reports, gossip magazines and television talk shows. The panic affected lawyers, therapists, and social workers who were dealing with all the supposed victims. Later, when the Satanic Panic seemed to be dying down, these authorities were found guilty of fabricating stories, making false accusations against the families of the people they were supposed to be helping. In many cases, therapists used hypnosis to implant false memory into patients. These false memories led some people to believe that their families were in a Satanic cult and have abused them as children. Some women were led to believe, through hypnosis, that they had been used as breeders to produce several babies to be used in Satanic ritual sacrifice, conducted by their own parents. Of course there were some people who just wanted to get their 15 minutes of fame by getting onto a talk show or news report and had fabricated sensationalized stories in order to achieve this. Needless to say, many families were destroyed and some are still in therapy today, due to the trauma they suffered from having such horrific memories implanted into their brains.
The music industry certainly did not go untouched. Several alternative music artists, especially heavy metal bands, were summoned to court and had to defend their music. Accusations that these bands were in league with the Devil, presented these musicians as cult leaders who encouraged listeners to perform blood sacrifice. They also were accused of putting subliminal messages in their music that encouraged teenagers to kill or commit suicide. The entire setup became a media circus. The evangelical Christians had a hay day with all of this, and highly encouraged the purge of Satanists and witch cults. Anyone appearing atypical to the mundane herd were outright attacked both verbally and physically. Many Satanists, witches and pagan groups laid low during this dangerous era.
The Satanic Panic Today:
Fast forward to today- Once again we Satanists need to be diligent and mindful with the words and actions we chose to use, both online and off. If we really look at it, the Satanic Panic never really went away, it just calmed down , almost went dormant, over the years. It definitely took a different route and the media put the hype on the backburner. This helped to create a false sense of security, even liberty for we Satanists, also for anyone on the outskirts such as: practitioners of witchcraft, pagans, etc. In North America as in many parts of the world, we are judged and frowned upon simply for not being one of the main 3 religious, but especially for not being Christian. In North America alone, there have been random physical attacks on Satanists and witches, very rarely has this made the headlines. People have lost their jobs or not even able to get hired simply because they are not Christian. Really think about it. If you are not out of the Devil’s broom closet and suddenly came out public as being a Satanist, would people treat you differently? Would you lose your job? Would you risk losing friends or a relationship? Would you need to fear of being attacked?
Over the past 5 years, I personally, have noticed more, and more news reports referring to crimes as being “Satanic” or Satanism associated with racists groups and murders, even if the accused have no links or indications towards it. Since the 2020 pandemic with the lockdowns and people being more at home also more online; a rise of interest in the occult and Satanism has grown. This sudden interest has also created a stir in those who oppose Satanism, the self righteous Christian groups as well as other individuals who simply feel their duty as a “good Samaritan” is to rid of anyone that they personally feel is harmful to society. These groups and individuals are a danger to individual Satanists. Some do find and stalk out witches and Satanists online, try to find out where they live, who they associate with, etc. These groups or “righteous” individuals seek to bring physical harm to the Satanist or witch they are stalking in the online shadows. Many mask as Satanists and join LHP or Satanist groups on Facebook and other social media platforms. They try to gain your trust and then befriend you on a personal level outside from the social media group or forum. This new interest bringing Satanism into the spotlight is influencing the media once again. News reporters are starting to bring up more reports accusing crimes as being done by Satanists. Recently in the short span of 1 week alone, I came across 2 news reports which made accusations of the crimes reported as being committed by Satanic cult members. We will be hearing more of such reports as the months progress, know that many u unstable minds are influenced by this.
The reawaking of the 80s Satanic Panic is happening and has been escalating rapidly. As Satanists we need to be aware of it. Satanic content creators, authors, and those who simply share about Satanism within the social media realms, all need to be mindful as to what we are sharing. We have to remember that our audience is not just our longtime supporters and personal friends. We are reaching to a much broader audience and do not know to what extent our words or what share, might affect an individual. Don’t think that because you got a low number marked as your following that a larger audience isn’t paying attention. Not all who keep up to date with your material are subscribed to your YouTube or blog and etc. We have to keep in mind that our biggest fan base is usually our enemies. They are fine combing our words. seeking out what they can use against us, what content they can report to the authorities. We don’t need to walk on eggshells but we, as Satanists, do not need to lend explicit information or the details about our personal practice to strangers either.
As authors we need to double think what we publish, we need to chose our words and subject matter wisely. Many who are attracted to Satanism and the occult, come into it from an unstable place within themselves and many do suffer from mental illnesses which go untreated. Such individuals, can take whatever we publish or say, very literally and act out upon it. So if you’re an author or put out content on YouTube and you sensationalize your material to grab the attention of a larger audience or to make yourself appear grand, know that you can be damaging certain individuals and can be held accounted for crimes they might commit against themselves and others. This is why in Satanism, it is important to hold what is meant to be secret, secret. And to also be truthful and have integrity. We need to keep our egos in check! To have a healthy ego is encouraged in Satanism however an over active ego can be harmful for all concerned. An unhealthy ego will make you forget Satan and make it all about you. Those who use sensationalism in Satan’s name to gain either monetary profit or popularity are helping to feed the fire of another damaging Satanic Panic.
*Aside from being diligent of what you share in content, you as a Satanist, must also be very careful who you connect with in the world and especially in the online world. Don’t trust easily or be quick to share anything personal about yourself and your practice to anyone, even if they claim to be a Satanist. Be leery of profiles that don’t show a picture of the actual person and of anyone who friends you online but never, even after a long period of time, reveals their actual image or name to you. Also, be careful of anyone who wants your personal phone number or address, especially if they are keeping themselves and their information hidden. Let’s try our best to avoid harm and accusations against us, also let’s do our best not to repeat the 1980s attack on Satanism.
